Plans approved to spend £1.8m to improve area around Clock Tower

Plans to spend £1.8m resurfacing the Leicester Clock Tower area have been approved.

Councillors said the pedestrian area around the Clock Tower was last revamped in 2008 and is in need of repaving and smartening up.

The resurfacing will include Churchgate and the Haymarket area, which are proposed to be pedestrianised.

The improvement work is part of the Connecting Leicester Programme to make the city centre connected, safe and family friendly, the city council said.

As part of the plans, the slabs around the Clock Tower will be replaced with the same materials used in Jubilee Square, Cathedral Garden and New Market Square.

Work is expected to start in October with the scheme due to complete in spring 2020.
