Man arrested in Ashby armed robbery has died in hospital

A suspected robber who was taken ill at the scene of an armed robbery in Market Street, Ashby, has died in hospital this morning (Saturday 15 July).

Police were called just after 10pm on Thursday to reports of two men entering a store and threatening staff with a baseball bat and golf club, demanding cash.

One of the suspects made off in a vehicle which was waiting outside the store.

The second suspect, a 29-year-old man, was stopped by members of the public and held in the street until police arrived.

When the police arrived, the 29-year-old was arrested in connection with the robbery but became ill and was taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre.

His death is being treated as unexplained and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course. Police enquiries are also continuing into the robbery itself.

A 24-year-old man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He was later released from police custody pending further investigation.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is carrying out an independent investigation into police involvement in the man’s death.
