Body found in canal in Leicester

Police have cordoned off an area near Belgrave Gate after the discovery of a body in a canal.

Police and forensic officers are at the scene near Leicester College’s Abbey Park campus.

The body was discovered in the water in the Grand Union Canal at 12.45pm today.

The towpath near the canal has been sealed off by police and an investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the discovery.

It is not clear who discovered the body or who called the emergency services.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: “We were called to the canal near Painter Street, in Leicester, at 12.45pm today following a report of a body in the water.”

“We are in the early stages of our inquiries to establish the circumstances of the discovery.”

“The canal towpath has been closed off and emergency services are dealing with the incident.”

“Anyone with information which can assist us is asked to get in touch.”
