An 11-year-old girl who fell from a water ride at Drayton Manor Theme Park has died.
The girl, who was on a school trip, fell from the Splash Canyon ride this afternoon. The ride was shut down after the accident.
The girl, believed to be from the Leicester area, was airlifted to Birmingham Children’s Hospital at about 2.20pm. She was confirmed dead shortly after arrival at hospital.
Her parents have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
The Splash Canyon ride contains 21 boats that ride across fast flowing rapids. It’s believed the girl fell into the water and was rescued by park staff.
She was given life support and flown to hospital, but sadly died just before the helicopter landed.
Reading a statement, the park’s visibly shaken director George Bryan said: “We are all truly shocked and devastated, and our thoughts are with the family and friends at this horrendously difficult time.”
Visitors at the park said they saw park staff with “tears running down their face”, but staff would not provide any information or comment.
The park remained open after the accident, although new visitors were turned away after the incident.
