Police warn Asian households after surge in burglaries targeting gold in Leicester

Residents in the city are being advised to be vigilant and protect their homes after a spate of burglaries in the Leicester area.

Thieves are particularly targeting Asian homes in search for valuable gold jewellery.

Leicestershire Police Neighbourhoood Watch have issued a warning to residents in the Rushey Mead, Belgrave, Hamilton and Evington areas of the city.

Officers have said homes are being targeted after the owners have left their properties and want homeowners to become more security conscious.

Officers say residents should take simple steps to protect their homes. This includes:

  • Ensuring all windows are locked with a key, making it more difficult for thieves to force them open
  • When leaving home after dark, keep the lights on in the house or even the television turned on
  • If your home has a security alarm system then please use this when leaving the house, even if your popping out for a few moments
