Standstill traffic on M1 after car bursts into flames in Leicestershire

Traffic on the M1 was stopped this morning after a car burst into flames on the motorway.

The incident happened on the southbound carriageway of the M1, between Junction 21a for the A46 and Junction 22 for Markfield.

Fire crews from Coalville and Leicester’s Southern fire stations were called to the scene shortly after 11.30am. The motorway was closed as firefighters extinguished the fire.

A spokesman for Highways England said: “We have stopped traffic on the M1 southbound between junction 22 and 21a due to a vehicle fire.”

They added: “Delays are starting to build, please allow plenty of extra journey time.”

After the fire was extinguished and the vehicle recovered, one lane of the southbound carriageway was reopened at around midday.

All three lanes were reopened at around 12.45pm, causing traffic delays to ease shortly after.
