Motorists have been warned to drive carefully after the ‘wet and slippery’ conditions have led to three accidents this morning.
The first accident took place at around 7.55am. A single vehicle crashed into the central reservation on the northbound carriageway near Junction 21.
The second collision happened moments later in the same location, with a car crashing into the reservation on the southbound carriageway.
The M1 was blocked in both directions as a result of the crashes.
The third accident was then reported on the northbound carriageway of the M1 between Junction 22 and 23 just after 9.30am.
Highways England are at the scene and clearing the site of the collision. However, they have warned of heavy traffic on both sides of the motorway between Junction 20 and Junction 21.
A spokesman for Leicestershire Police said: “Today the weather is miserable which in the UK means rain and poor visibility.”
“We have had a number of crashes and accidents already and can all drivers please be careful on our fast roads as we know traffic is backing up. Have a good and safe day.”
