Police given stop and search powers after ‘disorder’ at Leicester Caribbean Carnival

Leicestershire Police were authorised to use stop and search powers overnight following yesterday’s Caribbean Carnival.

The powers, under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, were approved following reports of disorder during the festival on Victoria Park.

The stop and search order covered an area within Leicester City Centre inner ring road from 6.25pm yesterday (Saturday) until 6.25am this morning (Sunday).

A police spokesman said: “They are in place to enable officers to search for offensive weapons or dangerous instruments, to prevent incidents of serious violence.”

Leicestershire Police is signed up to the Government’s Best Use of Stop and Search Scheme, a voluntary scheme which aims to achieve greater transparency and community involvement in the use of stop and search powers.

The scheme also encourages forces to tell people when there is a Section 60 authorisation.
