Long delays on M1 due to Download Music Festival

Highways England are warning motorists of delays towards Castle Donington in Leicestershire, as rock fans head to the Download Music Festival.

Queues have started building on the M1 northbound, near J23A as festival goers head out early to set up camp.

The annual event is being held at Donington Park and runs from Friday 14 June to Sunday 16 June.

The event is expected to attract thousands of rock fans from across the country and people are already setting up their camps ahead of the 3 day festival.

The exit slip road from the M1 northbound on to the A453 was closed this afternoon in a bid to ease the traffic as people made their way to the Festival.

Holiday makers traveling to East Midlands Airport have also been caught up in the traffic. There have been reports of some people abandoning their taxis and walking to the airport in a bid to catch their flight.

A spokesperson for the airport advised passengers to leave extra time to reach the airport because of the festival.
