Homes evacuated after major gas leak in Leicester

A number of homes have been evacuated this afternoon, with a huge area around Blackbird Road cordoned off, following reports of a gas leak in Leicester.

Police were called to reports of a ruptured gas mains just before 11.30am this morning.

It is understood the gas leak has occurred where road works are ongoing at the junction of Blackbird Road and Ravensbridge Drive.

Residents living within a 100 metre radius of Blackbird Road have been told to leave their homes and go to a family or friends home.

A cordon has been put in place while emergency services monitor the gas leak.

Blackbird Road is not accessible from the following roads: Parker Drive, Devonshire Road, Cornwall Road, Larchmont Road, Woodgate, Groby Road, Abbey Gate and Frog Island (A50). Anstey Lane is not accessible from Buckminster Road and Colwell Road.

The roads are expected to remain closed for most part of the afternoon and Police have asked the public and motorists to avoid the area while the incident is dealt with.
