Firefighters called to a blaze in a garage off Narborough Road have found an illegal cannabis growing operation.
The plants and cultivation equipment was found in a disused car repair shop, in Briton Street, off Narborough Road, on Friday 8 June.
No one was injured in the incident and no arrests have been made in connection with the discovery.
This has been the third discovery of an illegal cannabis plant in as many weeks, with a woman arrested in the beginning of June for growing cannabis in her loft causing a house fire
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, however Police have advised that illegal operations such as this pose a high fire hazard.
A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Police said: “The growing of cannabis is not only illegal but it is a major fire hazard.”
“Premises where cannabis is being grown often have windows covered up, strong and constant lighting throughout the day and night, high levels of heat and condensation and lots of power cables being used, often in a small area – ideal conditions for a fire to start and spread quickly.”
“Anyone who recognises these signs and suspects cannabis is being produced in their neighbourhood should report it to the police immediately.”
Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the fire are ongoing.
