Police begin investigation into Keith Vaz drug claims

The Police have started an investigation into possible drug offences by Leicester MP Keith Vaz. The investigation comes two months after the MP was embroiled in a scandal involving two male escorts.

Mr Vaz quit as chairman of the influential Home Affairs Select committee in September, after the Sunday Mirror claimed he paid for the services of the escorts.

The story included photographs and secret recording of Vaz and the sex workers. According to the newspaper, the MP indicated to one of the men that he would pay for Cocaine and the recordings also mentioned other party drugs.

Scotland Yard said the police had received a letter on September 7 asking them to look into the matter. The police will not confirm the identity of the person who wrote the letter.

Mr Vaz said he welcomed the investigation and he would co-operate fully with the police.

The police said the investigation started on Thursday 10th November and will assess “what criminal offences – if any – may have been committed”.
