Large pothole appears on M1 causing huge traffic delays

There’s huge traffic delays on the M1 this morning, near East Midlands Airport, due to a pothole which has opened up on the motorway.

The pothole has emerged over two lanes, between J23a and J24 of the Southbound carriageway, forcing them to close. Only one lane remains open.

Highways England have said this is causing disruption to motorists and traffic has built up with delays expected.

There’s reports of several cars being damaged as a result of the pothole.

Emergency repair workers are being sent to the scene to repair the damage.

Leicester’s Area Traffic Control tweeted: “The pothole is causing severe delays with traffic queuing from junction 25 for Nottingham.”

Leicestershire Police and Highways England are already at the scene.

The potholes were first reported at about 8am this morning. Leicester Area Traffic Control tweeted: “A formation of a pothole has emerged across two lanes; M1 Southbound between J24 and J23a, damaging several cars in the process. Two lanes are closed; only one running at this time.”
