A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man on London Road in the early hours of this morning.
A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is in police custody awaiting questioning.
Initially officers believed the man was involved in a hit and run accident. However it is now believed that the victim may have been assaulted before his death.
The man was found with serious injuries in the early hours of this morning. He was taken to hospital for treatment but unfortunately died.
It is believed the victim lived locally and is still to be identified formally.
A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on the deceased later this evening to establish the exact cause of death.
London Road was closed off for most part of the day, from Regent Street to Waterloo Way, whilst officers carried out a thorough investigation of the crime scene. The area has since re-opened to traffic.
Detective Chief Inspector Martin Smalley is leading the investigation. He said:
“We are currently in the process of reviewing CCTV footage from the area and carrying out many other enquiries locally in an attempt to establish exactly what happened prior to the victim being found in London Road, and to seek eye-witnesses.
From the enquiries conducted to date, it is possible that the man may have been assaulted before he was found in London Road in the early hours.”
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact them on 101, quoting incident number 8 of 8th March.
