Traffic came to a standstill on the M1 in Leicestershire this morning after reports of people entering the busy carriageway.
There were major delays near Leicester Forest East Services, after the M1 was closed in both directions.
The incident caused severe delays on both sides of the motorway, whilst emergency services dealt with the situation.
The motorway has since been reopened and traffic is flowing normally.
A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: “At around 9.45am today, we received a report of concerns for the welfare of a woman at Leicester Forest East services on the M1.”
“It was reported that the woman had entered the carriageway. Traffic was stopped so officers could approach the woman.
“She has since been taken to a place of safety.”
