M1 in Leicestershire still closed after man suffers life threatening injuries in crash

The M1 northbound in Leicestershire is expected to remain closed for a number of hours after an accident this morning which has left one person with life threatening injuries.

The emergency services are currently at the scene of the collision on the M1 northbound carriageway, between J20 and J21, near Whetstone.

Leicestershire police have confirmed the collision has involved four HGV’s.

The fire service and paramedics attended the scene and a 47-year-old man was taken to the University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire for treatment to his injuries. His condition is described as serious.

There are no reports of anyone else having been injured.

Traffic Police have warned motorists of delays as the M1 remains closed between junctions 20-21. This is to allow officers to carry out an investigation of the scene.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area and to seek an alternative route.

Police are also appealing for witnesses who were travelling along the M1 and saw the collision itself or the lorries being driven beforehand to contact them.
