A part of the M1 motorway in Leicestershire is going to be closed to all traffic next weekend, causing major congestion and delays for drivers.
The closure will take place between 23A and Junction 24 of the motorway, near East Midlands Airport, on both the north and southbound carriageways.
This is to allow a new road bridge to be put in place, as well as carry out essential waterproof works to existing bridges.
To allow the work to take place, the southbound carriageway will close at 10pm on Friday 11 May.
The northbound carriageway will shut at midnight. Both carriageways will reopen at 3pm on Sunday 13 May.
A diversion, using the A453 Ashby Road, will be in place in both directions (see diagram below).
A spokesman for the project said: “As the M1 is one of the UK’s busiest motorways, we expect significant congestion and delays along this diversion route and the motorway.”
“Therefore we advise drivers to avoid this area if possible and allow for extra time for their journey – in particular if travelling to East Midlands Airport.”
