Major transformation of Highcross moves a step closer

Planning permission has been granted to redevelop the House of Fraser store at Highcross in Leicester, allowing for larger stores and new brands to take its place.

Three of the new units have already been earmarked for specific companies, including larger stores for Zara and JD Sports and a new crazy golf course.

The plans will transform and improve a significant part of Highcross, in addition to breathing new life into the surrounding shopping streets.

The House of Fraser store is currently spread over three floors. As part of the reconfiguration, the space will be divided into eight new units, allowing for the introduction of larger, experiential flagship stores as well as new and exciting brands.

The decision to close the House of Fraser store follows a difficult trading period for the outlet store.

The new units will be able to accommodate retail, food & beverage and leisure operators, enhancing the mix of stores at the centre.

A spokesman for Hammerson, the company that owns the Highcross, said: “This will enable Leicester to position itself as one of the best regional retail destinations in the UK and deliver a unique shopping environment where more happens.”

The multi-million pound project is expected to be completed towards the end of 2018.
