A man has been arrested after Police had to close the M1 in both directions earlier today.
The incident was caused by a driver who had stopped his car on the southbound carriageway of the M1, at around 1pm today.
Police were concerned for the welfare of the driver and decided to stop and hold traffic in both directions just before Junction 20. This was to allow The police to approach the vehicle with an ambulance crew.
The motorway was closed for about 45 minutes, causing miles of traffic in both directions.
Due to the actions of the man at the scene, he was arrested by Police on suspicion of causing a public nuisance.
Leicestershire Police said: “Officers were made aware of the broken down vehicle on the M1 southbound near junction 20 at around 1.15pm today.”
“Concerns were raised for the safety and welfare of the driver of the vehicle and officers attended the scene.”
“The driver voluntarily left the vehicle. East Midlands Ambulance Service attended to the driver. He had not suffered any physical injuries.”
“Due to actions of the driver at the scene, he was arrested by officers on suspicion of causing a public nuisance and is currently in Police custody.”
