Man confirmed dead after fire in care home in Oadby

A man has died following a fire at a care home in Oadby.

Police were called to a flat on Howden Road at about 5.50pm yesterday (24 April) to assist the ambulance service, who were concerned for the welfare of a male occupant at the property.

On arrival, officers discovered that the flat was barricaded from inside and it was soon apparent that there was a fire at the location.

Fire crews were then called to the scene, who gained entry to the premises and discovered a man’s body inside. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A cordon was put in place around the flat so investigating officers could carry out their enquiries at the scene.

The cordon is affecting local access to the area.

A police spokesman said: “Enquiries are in their early stages to establish the full circumstances surrounding the man’s death and the events leading up to it.”

“Due to the police contact with the man before his death was identified, a mandatory referral will be made to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) as is standard procedure in these circumstances.”
