Police officer in hospital after being dragged by car in Leicestershire

A Leicestershire Police Officer is recovering in hospital after being dragged by a car which was stopped for a suspected drug-driving offence.

The incident happened near Ashby, on Squirrel Lane, in the early hours of Sunday 5 January.

Officers were sent out to investigate a car which was reportedly being driven suspiciously. 

The driver of the vehicle stopped for officers when their car pulled alongside it.

The male driver, a 22-year-old man, then attempted to drive off from the scene, dragging the policeman with him.

The officer managed to pull the keys out of the engine and the suspect was arrested.

The Police officer sustained injuries in the incident and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The male suspect who is from Derby was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, driving while under the influence of drugs, driving without insurance, dangerous driving and assaulting an emergency worker.
