Protest march in support of Glenfield hospital Leicester

A protest march will take place today opposing the closure of the specialist children’s heart unit at Glenfield Hospital.

The route will start from Victoria Park and end in the city centre. People traveling to Leicester are being warned of traffic delays. There are expected to be road closures along the route between 12-1pm.

The procession will take off from Granville Road at about 12pm. It will head towards London Road, Waterloo Way, Granby Street, Gallowtree Gate, East Gates and High Street. It is expected to arrive at Jubilee Square at 12:45pm, where a rally will be held.

Parking on London Road will be restricted for some time and road closures will be in place on London Road, Granville Road, Waterloo Way, St George’s Way and Regent Street. Roads in the city centre will also see disruptions.

The highways agency have put up early warning signs to inform the public of the possible delays along the route.

Martin Fletcher, Director of City Highways said:

“The closure of the children’s heart unit is something that a lot of local people feel strongly about. As a council we have a duty to enable demonstrations like this to take place safely.”

On Valentine’s Day the Haymarket Shopping Centre will also be displaying a giant Valentine’s card for people to come along and sign their names and show support for the children’s heart unit.
