A man has admitted the shocking rape of a young woman in Leicester’s Watermead Park.
Gurpal Singh Gill, 33, pleaded guilty to three counts of rape at Leicester Crown Court today.
The incident took place on the evening of Thursday 23 May, when the victim was walking through the park with her dog.
The 20-year-old woman was approached by Gill, who began talking to her.
Gill then suddenly grabbed her and subjected her to a serious sexual assault, during which she sustained a number of cuts and bruises.
During her ordeal, the woman managed to connect her mobile phone to the police and the incident was recorded on her phone.
Following the assault, Gill fled to London where he was traced and arrested a few days later.
Detective Constable Richard Wilson was the investigating officer. He said: “This was a vicious and nasty assault on a woman in a public place.”
“The evidence against Gill was overwhelming and he had no choice but to plead guilty today. This has been an extremely difficult time for the victim, who has shown immense courage all the way through the investigation and legal proceedings.”
“We hope Gill’s plea helps the victim move on with her life and put the events of that evening behind her.”
Singh will be sentenced on Friday 16 August.
