A 32-year-old man who admitted attacking and raping a woman in Bede Park has been given a mandatory life sentence in prison.
Michal Cezary Podlaszczyk approached the victim as she walked through the city park on the morning of 29 October last year.
He knocked her to the floor, assaulted her and stole her mobile phone and debit card before running off.
Podlaszczyk appeared at Leicester Crown Court today where he was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum sentence to serve of seven-and-a-half-years after admitting three counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault and theft and robbery.
Podlaszczyk had already served 12 and a half years for manslaughter in his native Poland in 2003. He was released in 2015.
A year after his release he came to the UK and in October raped and robbed the woman in the Leicester park.
Prosecuting, Jim Thomas said: “She is frightened to go out and is constantly worried when there’s a knock at the door.”
Judge Philip Head called the attack “sadistic” and described the defendant as a “damaged and dangerous” killer.
