Residents evacuated after fire in five storey building

Residents were evacuated from a five storey building after a fire broke out in the early hours of this morning.

The incident occurred at about 2am this morning at the Zenith Building in Colton Street in the city centre.

A resident living in one of the flats raised the alarm after smelling smoke. It took six fire crews to tackle the blaze and bring it under control.

Firefighters had to check each of the five floors thoroughly before pronouncing the building safe.

Fire services believe the blaze began in or around a rubbish area and the incident is currently under investigation.

No one was hurt in the blaze.
