Live: Roads closed in Leicester due to gas leak

Police have closed a number of roads in the city due to a gas leak.

The road closures affect Sudeley Avenue, Abbey Lane (city bound) and Beaumont Leys Lane, which were closed at around 12:44pm.

Fire crews were called to the area after the smell of gas was noticed on a construction site. 

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Initial call received to a hissing noise and a strong smell of gas in the area of a construction site.”

“Fire Service in attendance found a fractured four-inch gas main. 60 metre cordon being put into place.”

Police have said there are no casualties as a result of the leak.

The incident is causing heavy traffic in the area and drivers have been advised to find alternative routes.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said “We were requested to attend at 12:44pm today by the fire service, which is leading on this incident.”

“The police are assisting at the scene. There are a number of road closures in the area and people have been asked to avoid the area and find alternative routes.”
