The Royal Mail is making changes to its depot opening hours and deliveries, with effect from today.
The changes are due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and designed to ensure the safety of both Royal Mail colleagues and customers.
As of today, the opening hours at local delivery offices, which include customer service points, are being changed until further notice. The new opening hours will be 7am to 9am and they will be closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.
However, Royal Mail’s largest locations will be open between 7am -11am.
Customers will also be given longer to collect or have an item redelivered, as the retention period is temporarily being extended to 30 calendar days, before uncollected items being returned to the sender.
There will also be changes to the special delivery guaranteed services, as follows:
- For items posted from now onwards, the guaranteed delivery time by 9am the next working day will change to by 12pm the next working day
- The guaranteed delivery for Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm will change to by 9am the next working day
Royal Mail have also made changes to the way parcels and postal deliveries needing a signature are handed over.
To minimise contact during delivery, staff will not be handing over the hand-held devices to customers to capture signatures. Instead the items will be logged as delivered once it is handed over.
Additionally, for a delivery of any item which will not fit through the letterbox, this will be placed at the door before the postal worker knocks and then steps aside to ensure a safe distance is being maintained.
In a statement, the Royal Mail said: “Throughout this crisis, we will continue to deliver the most comprehensive service we can to all our customers.”
“However, as cases of coronavirus increase across the UK, we along with other organisations are experiencing growing levels of employee absence due to illness and self-isolation.”
Rico Back, Royal Mail Group Chief Executive Officer also added: “To support the Government’s advice to stay at home and avoid non-essential journeys, we urge customers to only visit Customer Service Points where absolutely necessary. As a reminder, we can also redeliver your item(s) for free.”
