A man shattered a woman’s skull in a vicious and horrific sexual attack, leaving her for dead near a park in Leicester.
A court was told that Zakarya Etarghi brutally attacked the woman and then pleaded with friends to help him leave the country.
The woman, who is in her 50s, was found in a park off Cedar Road, Evington in the early hours of the morning in August last year.
The woman was left with life-threatening injuries including a skull fracture with bleeding to the brain, contusion to the left lung, spinal fractures and significant brain injuries.
The prosecution called it a “brutal attack” and said it was “miraculous” the woman did not die following the attack.
Etarghi admitted he was present in the park that night but denies both charges of attempted murder and rape.
The 24-year-old said they had drunk and taken cocaine together. He also admits that they kissed and touched each other in a sexual way.
He claims nothing else happened and when he left her in the park, the victim was not injured in any way.
Etarghi claims someone else must have carried out the attack after he left.
However, DNA profiles obtained from blood samples and cigarette packets in the defendant’s flat matched that of the woman.
The court heard that Etarghi fled to Stoke-on-Trent after the attack and hid away for a fortnight until his arrest.
