Work has started on a new £1.6 million sexual health clinic in Leicester’s Haymarket shopping centre.
The new clinic will cover Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. The clinic will be located on the first floor of the Haymarket Shopping Centre, on the site of the old TX Maxx store.
The clinic is currently based at St Peter’s health centre and has 28,000 visitors a year.
Earlier this month, a De Montfort University student won a competition to design the look for the new sexual health clinic.
Sasha Bahra, an interior design student at De Montfort University, won the competition with her design featuring curved seating, parquet-style flooring and LED lighting to help people navigate around the building.
Students from the University were asked to come up with designs for the waiting room, staff room, entrance glazing and entrance sign at the new clinic.
Sasha’s design will now be incorporated into plans for the new premises. She was also presented with a £500 prize from design consultancy Arcadis, in recognition of her achievement.
Contractors J Tomlinson will transform the empty shop unit into a modern, bright and welcoming base, which will meet clinical standards. This will include fitting out up to 10 consulting rooms for staff to see patients.
It currently costs the council £702,000 per annum to run this service. It hopes to cut costs by relocating the clinic, resulting in long-term savings to the council’s revenue budget.
The council believes the new city centre location will be convenient for people to access with better public transport links and parking nearby.
