Thieves break into ATM using gas canister

Thieves have targeted another ATM in the early hours of this morning. It comes after a spate of robberies within the Leicestershire area.

The latest incident happened today (Friday 5 September) at about 3.40am. Police say theives targeted the ATM on the wall of the Co-op store in Linden Drive, Lutterworth.

The thieves forced their way into the premises before using a gas canister to open the ATM and stealing cassettes containing cash from inside.

The cassettes were recovered later this morning after a member of the public reported finding them discarded in Church Lane in Gilmorton.

Police say significant damage was caused to the premises during the break-in.

Witnesses reported seeing a number of men fleeing the scene in what is believed to be a dark coloured saloon type car. It drove off in the direction of Holly Drive.

Police are currently trawling through CCTV footage and conducting enquiries at the scene.
