Turkish restaurant praised for opening doors to the homeless and elderly on Christmas Day

A Turkish restaurant in Leicester has been praised for offering free food to the homeless and elderly people on Christmas Day.

Saray Mangal, on Highfield Street, off London Road, served a three-course meal to all to ensure ‘no one eat alone at Christmas’.

Motivated by his own experiences of homelessness when he first moved to the UK, owner Mehmet Aydin hopes this will inspire people to “care for each other no matter what religion, race, culture or language we speak”.

Mr Aydin worked with the Dawn Centre to invite homeless people to the event. Those who attended, enjoyed a mix of Turkish food and a traditional Christmas dinner.

The restaurant has been praised by The Big Issue, local press and many people on social media.

Jane Sowler posted on social media “That is so kind and generous”, while Lenny Splinter added “What a great thing you are doing, bless you”. Another poster added “We won’t see that in the Daily Mail”.
