Cows put down after vehicle towing cattle overturns in Leicester

A trailer carrying cows overturned on the A46 in Leicestershire this morning, resulting in four calves being euthanised.

The incident happened at about 10:45am on the A46 northbound, between Anstey and Wanlip, causing traffic disruption for several hours.

The injuries to the cows were assessed by emergency services, who decided the calves needed to be put down.

The RSPCA were also called out, although it’s believed the cows were put down before they arrived at the scene.

The accident caused huge queues of traffic, with Highways England having to block the southbound carriageway to allow northbound traffic to be released.

Leicestershire Police confirmed no people were injured in the incident.

Recovery work was carried out between A5630 and A6 Loughborough Road and diversions were in place during the “severe accident”.
