Wigston man due to stand trial found dead in prison cell

A man from Wigston who was due to stand trial for murder has been found dead in his Leicester prison cell.

Martley Matthew, 63, was found dead at HMP Leicester on 24 June.

Matthew was charged with the murder of Ashton Slatcher, 43, who was attacked on Green Lane Road in North Evington on 24 August 2017.

Mr Slatcher was left with significant brain damage after the assault and died of his injuries 10 months later in hospital.

The defendant, who denied murder, was due to start the first day of a trial at Leicester Crown Court earlier.

Police say a post-mortem test has taken place, but the cause of death is not yet known.

A statement released by the Prison Service said: “HMP Leicester prisoner Martley Matthew died on 24 June 2019.”

“As with all deaths in custody, there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”

The case has now been discontinued following the defendant’s death.
