A woman has died following a fatal collision with a car in the Woodgate area of Leicester.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision which happened yesterday (Saturday 29) night at about 11.10pm.
The incident involved a blue Mercedes CLK which collided into a bus stop, knocking the woman over.
The victim was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham where she was sadly pronounced dead.
Detectives believe, shortly before the fatal incident, the Mercedes was in collision with an orange Nissan GTR in the vicinity of Abbey Gate, Leicester, and was leaving the scene of this collision when it collided with the pedestrian.
The driver of the vehicle, a 26-year-old man from Leicester, was apprehended by police officers as he tried to flee from the scene.
He has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and being unfit to drive through drink or drugs.
He remains in police custody. Officers would like to speak to anyone who saw the blue Mercedes in the moments before the collision.
Detective Constable Alison Briance from the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “We are working very hard to piece together the events that led to this woman losing her life.”
“I would like to speak to anyone who was in the area of Woodgate at around 11pm last night and who saw a Mercedes car being driven around.”
“Even if you think the bit of information you have is insignificant – I want you to call us. Let me decide if it helps the investigation. What might seem small to you, may help our investigation into the collision.”
“The road was closed for a number of hours overnight to allow forensic investigations to be carried out and I’d like to thank everyone for their cooperation.”
